Lycoming Engine Terminology Explained

Factory Overhauled

The components utilized in constructing the engine meet or surpass service limits and specifications. While the engine retains its total time since new, it has undergone a major overhaul, resulting in zero time since then. Furthermore, this engine is accompanied by a one-year factory warranty extending up to the hourly overhaul period. This option is ideal for customers seeking the most economical engine solution.

Rebuilt “Zero Time”

Each component utilized in the construction of the engine meets or surpasses specifications for new parts, rendering the engine akin to a new one. It boasts zero time since its initial assembly and zero time since undergoing a major overhaul. While certain parts may be pre-owned, they adhere to the same specifications as new components. Similar to brand-new engines, this one comes with a two-year factory warranty extending up to the hourly overhaul period.

New

All components within the engine or affixed to it are entirely new. The engine has experienced zero operational time since its manufacture and has also undergone a major overhaul without accruing any additional operating time. These engines mirror the exact specifications used by OEM customers like Robinson for their newly manufactured aircraft. New engines come with a two-year factory warranty covering the hourly overhaul period.

Outright vs. Exchange

If you’ve ever bought aircraft parts, chances are you’re familiar with the terms “Outright” and “Exchange”. All Lycoming factory engines are available for purchase under either option. Opting to buy outright is the simplest route: you pay the full market price for the part and receive the engine, without any need for core deposits or returning a core article to the manufacturer/distributor.

In an Exchange transaction, suppliers typically charge an exchange fee (core deposit) which covers a predetermined “standard” amount allocated for specific repairs or overhauls. Should the costs for repairs or overhauls exceed this standard amount, the client may be billed the difference, referred to as over and above (O&A) charges.

In the case of Exchange sales for Lycoming engines, a refundable core deposit is collected at the time of purchase. The buyer has the option to provide an acceptable core engine before the exchange engine is shipped, and upon doing so, receives the core deposit back.
